The Phantom of the Opera

He sees her

He wants her

He doesn’t

Know how

To get her

Her voice

So beautiful

Like a silver bell

How sweet that sounds!

Would she sing for him?

The way he is?

Oh no

She would not

She cannot

Know how

He longs for her

The phantom of the opera

Lurks in the shadows

He listens and loves what he hears

He will play for her

She will sing for him

Come closer,

Come closer, my dear

The Miracle of Completion: A Christmas Poem

‘Twas the week before Christmas, and I sat here, amazed;

I thought I’d be busy; I thought I’d be crazed!

But if you can believe it, all my stuff has been done!

Not one thing’s unfinished! Not one single one!

The cards were done early,

Shopping was a breeze,

The gifts are all wrapped up as neat as you please.

But the thing that amazes and shocks me the most

Is—well, I don’t want it to sound like a boast—

But: The portraits are done! Every single last one!

And that last one, a pastel, it really was fun!

There was one of eight people—parents, cousins and nieces

(I worked from a pic that was falling to pieces)

There was one of six ladies who all work together

From three different photos; I wondered if whether

I’d get them all finished—it made me perspire!

I figured I’d run it right down to the wire

I’ve done that before, and it’s really not fun.

But I’m happy to say that MY CRAP IS ALL DONE!!!

A Poem about Penguins (And Other Important Stuff)

Penguins are black, penguins are white

Penguins are groovy and outtasight.

Penguins swim in the deep, cold sea

Penguins are friends to you and me.

Penguin babies are fluffy and cute

They’ve got grey feathers and little black snoots

So, buy a hybrid car today

Before global warming takes the penguins away

‘Cause if we keep driving SUVs,

There won’t be penguins,

Or birds, or bees

We’ve got to do something to save the planet

‘Cause I wanna keep the penguins, dammit!

Procrastination: A haiku

Yes, there’s stuff to do

Plenty of stuff, to be sure

...it’s just not fun stuff.

The Seven of Spades

Seven warriors in black armor

The spear is their weapon of specialty

They respond to the call of their sovereign:

Protect the kingdom!

Riding out in the light of dawn

They are a scouting party against the massing enemy

In single file they travel through the Narrows

Their captain takes the point

If he is struck down, his cadre has orders

Two will flee

The swiftest carry the message

The stoutest stay and fight

Defend the messengers!

Avenge the leader!

Die bravely, die fighting

Never die for naught.

Approaching a ridge in the evening gloaming

Darkness crawling across the moor

Nothing all day for the reconnoiter

Then at the ridge top, the heart drops

Fires of the camp dot the plain

Reaching out for miles, it seems

Glowing sparks of death, of defeat

Terrible, beautiful, terrible

Below on the slopes, they spot a chance

For a small raiding party to make a difference

The general's tent!

The captain locks eyes with his knights

Attack quickly, quietly

Strike the head of the beast,

The heart of the invasion.

We will die trying.

Two will stay

Someone must observe

Someone must report

The swiftest carry the message

Hotel Room of Doom

The carpet smells funny
The AC's a joke
It grinds and it wheezes
The drapes smell like smoke

The sheets, cheap and scratchy
The blankets are pilling
I so need to sleep, but
My eyelids aren't willing

The trucks on the highway
Make windowpanes rattle
And upstairs it sounds like
A Civil War battle

The people are screaming
The furniture's moving
Are they fighting, or is it
Something else that they're doing?

I've finally dropped off
Then, MY GOD! What's the matter?
The bedside alarm goes off like a bomb!
Some joker has tuned it to in-between-stations
Then turned up the volume to an ear-splitting wail
And set it for ten minutes into my slumber

The obnoxious jerk should be rotting in jail
And I should be home, sawing some lumber
Instead I'm stuck here, with my brain getting number
As I try to count sheep; there they go, nose to tail

Then AGAIN with the clock-alarm blasting at me!
I'd only hit "snooze" in my stark desperation
I turn on the light, but my sleep deprivation
Renders me null to suss the combination
That will silence the thing; so in my frustration
I rip out the plug, realizing too late
That I could have just turned the volume way down
If ever I have to stay again in this town
I might as well sleep on a sewer grate!

You Are Invited to My Halloween Party!

Come to my Halloween party

Wear your vampire cape and sash

We'll eat little bat-shaped cookies

And do the Monster Mash

I'll make some fizzy green punch

That looks like a slimy swamp

We can pass out Groucho glasses

And dance the Zombie Stomp

We'll pull apart some cotton

Hang cobwebs everywhere

Put streamers on the ceiling

And pumpkins on the stair

It will be so very festive

An orange and black delight!

Please come to the lovely party

I'm having on Halloween night

Come dance at my Halloween party

I'm hiring a zombie band

They promise to behave themselves

And to not eat anyone's hand

The witches that live across from me

Have said they'll bring a cake

I'm pretty sure it won't have frogs

But we do live near a lake...

I had to invite the werewolves

If not, they'd raise a din

If you play any party games with them

You should probably let them win

Dracula's coming at midnight

Bringing his brides in pairs

The Invisible Man might show up, or not

(Depends on how much he wears)

Frankenstein's monster will be there

If he can get off of work

It's tiring getting chased around

By peasants with pitchforks!

He'll need a draught of fizzy punch

To chase away his gloom

He'll eat some bat-shaped cookies

And stagger 'round the room

So, come to my Halloween party

I think we'll have some fun

But to be safe, maybe you should buy

Silver bullets for your gun!

Other Roads

So many places I've never been

Roads continue on

All these houses, filled with people I will never know

An endless supply of humanity

An endless ribbon of road

I circle aimlessly, but with a goal

To see these places I've never seen

To see where the endless road goes

It's getting dark

Grace

I listen while Bono sings

"Grace Finds Beauty in Everything"

I want grace, the lightness of being

The love, the quiet joy in heart

The stillness of the soul

The mercy conferred, "there but for the grace..."

Gracious is the giving and forgiving heart

Graceful is the one who moves through the world

Disturbing nothing, leaving a tender air

Of peace, that is

Grace.

The Sky Afire - Picture of the Day on Pixabay for 6/25/14

Not only is Pixabay a fabulous site for finding free-use photos and graphics, it's also a great writing prompt! One of my favorite things to do is go see what picture is being featured on Pixabay's home page and let that be an inspiration for a post. This picture from June 25, 2014 of an evening sky aglow with the fiery color of sunset inspired me to write a poem, if you will:

The sky is afire

With a shivering, shining glow

A flickering shimmer of amber above

Casting warmth on the land below

The trees stand in stark relief

Silhouettes against the molten flow

Are they not consumed by the conflagration?

The rustling leaves whisper, No

The kiss of the wind protects the trees

Even from this fiery show

They will survive years of dawns and dusks

And be just so, just so.

Bad Halloween for the Creature

The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Went out on Halloween

He had too much to drink, and soon

Was feeling pretty mean

He started, then, to growl and roar

And staggered from the bar

He broke the windows of a store

And vandalized a car

He left his slime on everything

And ran through people's yards

He smashed their jack-o'-lanterns

That they'd worked so hard to carve

He went around and scared some folks

Who were just trick-or-treat-ing

But to their rescue came some blokes

Who gave that fish a beating!

The Creature fled back to his lair

Beneath the waters deep

The people said, "You stay in there

And don't come back, you creep!"

The moral of this tale of mine

Is very plainly seen:

If you simply cannot hold your wine,

Stay home on Halloween!

Song of Late Summer

The afternoon sun

Shines golden and warm

Onto the couch, creating an oasis for lazy cats.

---

Voices of children

Bubbling laughter, tickling in from the street

They hold onto the summer magic for as long as they can

---

Last-minute splashes in the pool,

Last-second stampedes for the ice-cream truck;

The school supplies are bought and waiting

---

The heat now diminished

From a parching sear

To a glowing kiss, this will be missed in the depths of chill

---

But for now, Autumn beckons

With apples and red and gold leaves, football and cool blue skies

Until next year, sweet Summer...

The Easter Bunny is Kind of a Punk

I came to the conclusion, once

While searching like the dickens

That brightly colored Easter eggs

Must come from colored chickens

Chickens purple, green and blue

Chickens orange and pink

Some chickens must have polka dots

And some have stripes, I think

Why would the chickens hide their eggs?

I pondered this, most solemn

They say a rabbit is involved

I think the bunny stole 'em!

I know that rabbits don't lay eggs

The hens do all the work

He steals the eggs and hides them all

That bunny's quite a jerk

Now I understand just why

(In order steam to let off)

They make him out of chocolate

So folks can bite his head off!

Floating Away

The softly rolling tide brought a little boat to you

It kissed up against you, but

Every time the boat gently nudged

You pushed it away

Just as gently.

It would swirl, confused,

Regathering,

But drawn back again by the sweet rolling waves.

One time when the little boat came back to you,

You pushed it away again

A little farther this time.

A new current caught the little boat

And it floated away.

Christmas Day: Shaken

I knocked, and he didn't answer

(okay)

Texted, and he didn't reply

(surprised)

Called, and he didn't answer

(concerned)

His car was there

The neighbor hadn't seen him

We had plans, I explained

We always do, on Christmas Day

The neighbor knocked, loud

On doors, windows

Yelling his name

(worried)

I called the police

He's on the transplant list, I explained to the officer

(crying)

She kicked the door in

He was there

(...AND???)

Just asleep, she said

(embarrassed)

But he wasn't

He wasn't okay

(scared)

The ambulance came

(on a mission)

Took him to the hospital

They asked

Are you a family member?

No

He's my friend.

They said

He's lucky you were there

He is going to be okay.

(exhale)

Savannah Song

Lions lie lazily in the limpid light

Elephants effortlessly enter, effecting egrets' flight

Cheetahs chase chipper chimps in channeled tracks

Secretary birds stealthily stalk snakes for snacks

Leopards loll languidly, lithe and lissome

Wildebeest wander, their wee waifs so winsome

Buffalo brash about, bellowing, boorish and brassy

Swift servals slink by, sleek and sassy

Monkeys meander with muttering maws

Giraffe jounce juicy leaves with gyrating jaws

Gorillas grunt gruffly in gravelly tones

Zebras...um...I have nothing further to say about the zebras. They know what they did.

Can't Figure out Why It's so Hot?

It's not strange,

it's climate change!

They told us this would happen.

But we kept using oil

and polluting the soil,

and the ocean? We just threw crap in.

We didn't bother

to recycle or do other

things that could have saved us.

So now we'll burn;

We refused to learn

That we shouldn't have behaved thus.

Colores

Amarillo is yellow

Naranja is orange

To make this thing rhyme

Hold your nose and say "porridge".

Sexy Vampire

Here I am, wishin'
And here I am, hopin'
Here I am, sleepin'
With my windows open

Sexy vampire
Come on, take me
Consider this your
Invitation
Sexy vampire
Come on, make me
One of the sexy
Undead Nation

Angel, Edward,
Whatever your name is
Barnabas, Vlad
You know I'm your girl
Dracula, Bela
Never did you justice
I'm just dying to be
Part of your world
My friend Buffy
Warned me against you
Said she's never had
Very good luck
My friend Bella's
Taking it slowly
Three books in, and
They still haven't ...?

Sexy vampire,
How I want you
Show me the things you
Do at night
Sexy vampire,
Don't you want to
Drop by my place
And have a...bite?

November

We're deep into fall, now.
Past the first blush of color,
The return to school,
The first game of the season.

Past the tiny costumes
Clattering up my steps
To ring the bell, all excitement.
The candy is gone;
The giant spider has been put away.

Now, leaves once red and gold,
Fluttering like flapping flags on breeze-tossed branches,
Are brown and grey, curled and crunching beneath the scamper of squirrels
Keen to hide the season's treasures before retreating to their winter nests.

Fall has gone from crisp to cold
Bright blue skies, free of summer haze,
Will soon yield to clouds, grey and low
And gravid with calm, silent snow.

The days ever dwindling,
Until the Solstice stops the night's advance
And lets the day begin
The long creep back in.
